Standard battery sizes

The most well-known battery sizes are likely to be the batteries that you already use. There are 5 standard sizes for alkaline batteries; AAA, AA, C, D and 9V. These batteries are used in a lot of devices found around the home, like TV remotes, clocks and even some digital cameras. 80% of UK battery sales are alkaline batteries. However, even the standard alkaline batteries can cause some confusion as times, as there are different numbering systems for them. Size AA is also known as LR6, MN1500 or MX1500 AAA is equivalent to LR03, MN2400 or MX2400 Size C batteries can also be labelled with LR14, MN1400 or MX1400 D batteries are also numbered as LR20, MN1300 or MX1300 9V batteries are also known as 6LR61, PP3, MN1604 or MX1604 Knowing the different labels can make it easier to find the batteries you need!

Lithium coin cells

Of course, there are many more batteries than just the standard alkaline type. There is an increasing demand for lithium coin cells, which are used in devices like car keys, 3D glasses, some watches and kitchen scales. This particular type of battery is also used in Fitbit-style fitness watches. Lithium coin cell batteries account for around 7% of all batteries sold in the UK. Lithium coin cells have an easier system for numbering. They generally all start with CR followed by four digits. For example, a CR2032 battery has 20mm diameter and 3.2mm thickness. This can make it easier if you aren’t sure what type of coin cell you need.

Cylindrical batteries

There are other specialist sizes of batteries, such as miniature cylindrical batteries. 23A batteries are often used in doorbell push buttons, as well as remote control transmitters for garage doors and electric gates. CR123 batteries are another popular size with uses including security equipment and even some LED torches. They are different to your standard size batteries, they are often shorter or wider than AA or AAA batteries.

Button cells

Other battery sizes include the alkaline button cells, such as LR44. These type of batteries are often used in Christmas tree lights, digital thermometers and calculators. They are popular for small electronic household devices like this. Silver oxide button cells or watch batteries also fall into this category, however, batteries like these are becoming more difficult to change yourself; check out our blog on replacing your watch batteries.
