How to Extend the Life of Your Rechargeable Batteries
Rechargeable batteries are becoming an increasingly popular choice as people take steps towards more environmentally friendly options where possible. The capacity and recharge speed of these batteries has increased significantly compared to what was achievable just a few years ago. These newer batteries provide better performance, are smaller and lighter and, perhaps more importantly, offer longer operating times.
However, just like non-rechargeable batteries, it is important to take care of them to ensure that their life is extended as long as possible. This blog will offer some tips to help with that.
Avoid overcharging
If you want to extend the life of your rechargeable batteries, then one of the most important things to do is avoid overcharging. Once your battery has reached full charge you should ensure that it is disconnected. Overcharging a battery is an easy thing to do, but it can make a dent in its lifespan.
Avoid extreme temperatures
Batteries do not function well in extreme temperatures and exposing them to extremes of temperature can significantly reduce their operational life. Make sure that you store batteries at a reasonable temperature, both when they are in use and being charged.
Avoid excessive discharge
Once your rechargeable battery has reached a low level you should ensure that it is charged immediately. You should avoid using it beyond its capacity, for risk of damaging it permanently. Even when a battery is in storage or inactive, it will continue to discharge slowly, so keep this in mind.
Storage
The life of your rechargeable batteries is best when they are not fully charged or discharged. When a battery is in use it is best to ensure that it is fully charged and then unplugged before being placed in a device. If you are putting your batteries into storage, then it is a good idea to only do so if it is charged to around 50% of the capacity. You should check on them periodically and ensure that they remain charged to this level. Inactive batteries are best stored outside the devices they are being used in.
The life of a battery
It is important to remember that batteries, even rechargeable ones, do have a limited life. This is much longer with rechargeable batteries which can last 5 or even up to 10 years depending on how often they are charged. The loss of capacity in your batteries that occurs over time is irreversible and batteries that are no longer chargeable should be disposed of at an appropriate battery recycling point – never placed in the bin with general household waste.
Buying a good brand of rechargeable battery and taking good care of them using the tips we have already mentioned will go a long way towards helping to extend the life of your rechargeable batteries. Whilst you cannot make them last forever, they will last an effective working period. Looked after properly, they will not only do a little bit for the environment but also save you money in the long run.
