There’s no doubt that we all need batteries, whether it’s for our remote controls, smoke alarms or something more specific. We can also bet that the moment you need a battery, there isn’t any insight, no matter how many cupboards and drawers you search! Batteries are a product that we will always need; there are so many household items that take batteries and we always get caught out when they run out. But does this mean you should stock up on batteries and have a ready-made cupboard full of them? Here are a few things to consider before buying bulk batteries. bulk batteries

Cost of bulk batteries

There are some benefits to having bulk batteries as they can often be cheaper to buy. Sometimes the more you buy, the bigger the discount you may receive. Many manufacturers are now packing popular alkaline AA and AAA batteries in larger multipacks of 12, 24 and even 40. This keeps the cost down for the manufacturer which is then passed on to the suppliers.

How often do you need batteries?

You’ll probably be surprised at just how many items around your house require batteries. Do you go through batteries quickly or do you find that it’s months before you need a replacement battery for your children’s toy or kitchen clock? If you find yourself frequently changing batteries, buying in bulk might be a great solution. It can be incredibly handy to have spare batteries in the house, especially around certain periods of the year such as Christmas. How many times have you bought Christmas presents, only to realise that they don’t include the necessary batteries?

How long do they last?

Bear in mind that batteries do have a ‘shelf life’ so you will find a best before date on each battery. With this in mind, you might save money by buying bulk batteries but it’s only worth doing if you’re going to use them before their best before the date! Some types of batteries are renowned for long-lasting technology, such as Duracell’s innovative Duralock.  On balance we would recommend only buying enough batteries to last you 2-3 years. Although good quality alkaline batteries have a best before the date of up to 10 years, batteries are always at their best when freshly manufactured.

Pitfalls

If you use a lot of alkaline or lithium batteries and appear to go through them quite quickly, you might want a back-up stock ready and waiting. It’s worth noting that if you are planning to buy in bulk, double-check that you are buying the right battery first! Avoid ordinary zinc batteries that have low power and short shelf life. Also, avoid second hand Duracell batteries that have been repacked into plastic tubs; Furthermore, look out for multi-buy options of batteries in genuine original packaging.

Battery type

Depending on how many batteries you use you may wish to consider rechargeable batteries. Rechargeable batteries are already great quality and can often be recharged up to 1000 times or more. The latest types hold their charge a lot longer when not in use. Some products simply eat batteries for fun, such as DAB radios, so for heavy-use items, we would recommend investing in good quality rechargeable batteries and a charger. battery charger Contact our team to help you with any questions you might have.
